How to Use the Endian Management Center for Gateway Management

  Version 6.0

Applies to Platform: Switchboard 6.9.x
Last update: 18 Jan 2026

A crucial feature for the Endian Switchboard in 6.x is the Endian Management Center (or EMC) that was created to support managing the configurations of any/all gateways connected to the Switchboard. Using this feature, an administrator can efficiently create profiles (or templates) of a gateway and then assign that profile to any or all gateways connected to the EMC on the Switchboard.

Requirements

Before you begin you will need the following in order to complete this process:

  1. An Endian Switchboard that is already setup and accessible on a FQDN (fully-qualified domain name).

  2. An account with administrative access on the Endian Switchboard.

  3. The Switchboard must have the provisioning registration information for Endian Network as described under "Switchboard Setup" section of this article.

  4. The Switchboard and Gateways should be connected to EMC.

How EMC Works?

The basic premise of EMC is to create a profile (or template), which defines a subset of all a gateway's core configuration options. This template can then be assigned to other gateways which will then utilize the same configuration options as the profile device. A profile can include any subset of the following configuration options:

  • Antivirus software
  • Docker: enabled/disabled, incoming and outgoing containers firewall rules
  • Firewall rules: inter-zone traffic, external access, VPN traffic, incoming routed traffic, outgoing traffic,
  • Port forwarding and SNAT rules
  • Static and policy routing rules
  • Proxies: DNS, HTTP, SMTP, web content filtering
  • Various services: IPS/IDS, DHCP server, SNMP server, VPN portal
  • Automatic updates schedule

The configuration options exclude gateway unique fields like networking, zone options, uplinks, etc which should be managed using the Plug & Connect, provisioning or manual configuration procedures.

For a profile to be applied to a list of gateways, a single gateway must serve as the source of truth with respect to the configuration. This concept is known as the Gold gateway, which serves as a reference point from which the configuration is then replicated to all other gateways. Each profile can only define a single Golden gateway. The Golden gateway of a profile can be changed anytime, but there must always be only one at any single point in time. The Golden gateway can be substituted by any user who has access to the given profile.

Permissions Required

In order to be able to make use of the EMC, a Switchboard user account must have specific permissions including the "Manage Devices" and "Manage Profiles" permissions. These can alternatively be substituted by the "Superuser" permission, which by definition includes all other.

These permissions provide access to all profiles in the current user's organization. Users can then execute the various actions available on the profiles.

Create Profile

Navigate to Switchboard > Management > Profiles and click Add profile button to create a new profile.

  1. Profile name:  Provide a unique name for this profile.
  2. Organization:  Here you can a specific organization to use this profile.
  3. Description:  Enter a description for this profile.
  4. Modules:  Select the checkboxes next to those features you want to be captured in this profile. Each of these features configuration will be copied from the Gold gateway and used as the profile template.

Click Add button to create the profile.

Select the Gold Gateway

Once the profile is created, click the Edit icon that profile (shown below):

Select the Devices tab and under Gold gateway select Change and choose your Gold gateway you wish to use that contains the "master" configuration you want to use as this profile template.

Once the Gold gateway is selected, you need to retrieve the configuration to be stored on the EMC as a profile. You can click the Fetch Configuration button to perform this operation.

If this is successful, you should see success confirmation message and the Product and Version info displayed correctly. Now you can move on to adding additional gateways to utilize this Gold gateway profile.

Also, any time a change is made on the Gold gateway that you wish to use, you should use the Fetch Configuration process to update the profile.

Add Gateways (Receivers)

Now you need to add the gateways you wish to utilize the Gold gateway configuration profiles. To do this, navigate to Switchboard > Management > Devices and click the Edit icon next to the desired gateway. On the Details tab, you can select the Profile (as shown below).

Click the Change button to save the profile for this device. Repeat this process for each gateway you want to utilize this profile.

Manage Gateways (Receivers)

Now you manage the gateways which are utilizing the Gold gateway configuration profile. To do this, navigate to Switchboard > Management > Profiles and select the Edit icon and navigate to the Devices tab.

Under the Bulk Actions container, you will find three options you can perform that will be done for ALL gateways belonging to this profile.

  1. Update packages:  This will check for any available updates on all the gateways belonging to this profile. It will NOT install any of the updates but just check for the availability of the updates.
  2. Upgrade packages:  This will initiate the upgrade process to install any pending updates on all of the gateways belonging to this profile.
  3. Push configuration:  This will push the current Gold gateway profile to all gateways belonging to this profile. Before pushing the profile, it will check for and apply any outstanding updates automatically to ensure version compliance.

You can ensure a successful configuration push by following the Provisioning status under the Devices container. If it displays an OK message, then the configuration was successfully pushed.

Note

An important feature is the auto-rollback. If a gateway does not come online on the EMC after a new configuration is pushed, then it automatically rolls back to its previous state. There is a 5-minute time window from the time when the configuration has been pushed until the time when the gateway is expected to reconnect to the EMC.
